Silk of the Sea: Eel skin Tanning

Lucy will demonstrate the traditional process of using tannin rich plant material to transform and preserve an animals skin which might ordinarily go to waste.

You will learn how to prepare the skin to be transformed into a soft, durable and waterproof material. Making eel leather is a truly alchemical process and it is very manageable to continue to deepen your love of this skill at home.

We will be exploring bark tanning in this process and you will learn about the vast array of wild and locally available materials useful for tanning.

Stories will be shared about the incredible life cycle of the eel and its role in Irish mythology and folklore, as well as ways to transform your tanned skin into something you can carry around with you for years to come.

Respect for the animal and the gift of its skin will be practised throughout this process.

This kind of small-scale tanning is very accessible to people of many different abilities.
